Outbreak of common sense at the DfT???
- Targeting of the dangerous driving that actually causes accidents, tailgating,
cutting up, undertaking, aggression, inattention, incompetence, etc.
- Increase of motorway limits to 80
The problems:
- If the current speed camera mob have got anything to do with it it will still
end up as money making, targeting the maximum possible number of harmless /
trivial offences rather than those who are actually likely to cause accidents
and therefore still won’t improve road safety.
- No mention of the lane hogs who cause much of the undertaking
- We don’t have any useful numbers of traffic cops anymore (yet another negative
effect of speed cameras) particularly in Dorset which has suffered some of the
highest cuts
- Further reductions in some limits must be properly justified
– yes, sometimes the safe speed in a current 30 limit is 20, but sometimes the
safe speed in a 20 is less than 5 – I think you’ll find that with proper
policing targeting the right problems, lowering limits further simply won’t be
necessary and will have more of a negative overall effect than positive. We must
have realistic limits that stand a chance of being taken seriously and don’t
normally aim to penalise safe, sensible driving, and that’s going to mean
reversing some recent reductions.
- Why has it taken the DfT so long to listen to common sense and show a little?
